SNK의 대표작인 아랑전설 시리즈의 두 번째 게임. 1992년 12월 10일 첫 가동되었다.

용호의 권에 이은 SNK의 '100 메가 쇼크' 시리즈 제2탄으로 용량은 106 Mbit.

 

당시까지 아케이드 업계에서 미답의 영역이었던 100 Mbit의 용량과 거대한 캐릭터, 박력있는 줌인 / 줌아웃 연출로 용호의 권을

히트시킨 SNK가 연달아 100 메가 쇼크 시리즈 2탄으로 내놓은 게임.

전년도에 히트작까지는 아니라도 그럭저럭 괜찮은 성과를 냈던 아랑전설 1의 후속작으로 전작을 능가하는 대히트를 하면서 이후

아랑전설 시리즈가 SNK의 대표 프랜차이즈로 자리잡게 하는 기폭제 역할을 한 기념비적인 게임이다.

한편으로는 춘리와 함께 대전 액션 게임계의 영원한 히로인인 시라누이 마이와 대전 액션 게임계 최초의 한국인 캐릭터 김갑환의

데뷔작이기도 하다.

 

아랑전설 1과 용호의 권이 당대 아케이드 업계의 선두에 있던 스트리트 파이터 2의 그림자를 벗어나기 위해 차별적인 요소와

싱글 플레이의 재미에 보다 집중했던 것과 상반되게 아랑전설 2는 스트리트 파이터 2를 필두로 하는 당대의 유행을 보다 적극적

으로 수용하면서 전작 아랑전설 1의 개성적이었던 면을 절충한 게임이다.

거기에 용호의 권에 이어서 네오지오의 성능을 살려 스트리트 파이터 2를 능가하는 화려한 그래픽을 선보여 플레이어들의 눈을

사로잡았다.

이 시도는 큰 성공으로 돌아와 이듬해 발표된 후속작 아랑전설 스페셜과 함께 1993년 아케이드의 최고 화제작이 되었고. 당대에

스트리트 파이터 2의 대항마로 시장에 크게 어필할 수 있었지만 반대로 게임성 면에서는 스트리트 파이터 2의 영향을 너무

많이 받았다는 평가를 받기도 한다.

SNK도 나름대로 그런 비판을 피드백한 바가 있었는지 후일 리얼 바웃 아랑전설 쯤 가면 성공한 2편과 스페셜이 아닌 1편의

시스템과 폭망한 아랑전설 3의 시스템을 발전적으로 계승한 시스템을 도입해 호평을 받기도 했다.

 

초대 아랑전설의 주인공 3인방에서 5명이 추가되어 선택할 수 있는 캐릭터가 8명으로 늘어났고 모든 캐릭터에게 일발역전을

할 수 있는 초필살기가 하나씩 생겨나 호쾌한 플레이를 할 수 있었다.

캐릭터성 면에서도 많은 신경을 써서 테리를 비롯하여 전작에서 계속 출연하는 캐릭터들도 훨씬 세련된 디자인으로 리파인되었고

대전 액션 게임 사상 굴지의 섹스어필 및 인기여캐 시라누이 마이, 대전 액션게임 최초의 한국인 캐릭터 김갑환, 전작 중간

보스였던 빌리 칸 등의 유수의 인기 캐릭터들이 처음 출연한 게임이 본작이다.

새로운 최종보스는 기스가 죽은 후에 사우스 타운의 권력을 노리고 쳐들어온 볼프강 크라우저.

기스와는 이복 형제라는 설정이 있지만 본작 당시에는 그런 설정이 전혀 없는 그냥 갑옷 입은 콧수염 부자 아저씨였다.

김갑환은 장풍이 없었지만 여러모로 강캐였고 더군다나 그때까진 오락실에서 볼 수 없었던 한국인 캐릭터였다는 점까지 맞물려서

본작이 한국에서 인기를 끄는데 일익을 담당했다.

사우스 타운만을 무대로 했던 1편과는 달리 스트리트 파이터 2의 영향으로 전세계를 무대로 삼은 점도 특징.

그러다 보니 미국인인 앤디 보가드의 스테이지가 뜬금없이 이탈리아의 베네치아가 되는 등 설정 상 이해하기 힘든 점들도 있었다.

앤디 뿐만 아니라 죠 히가시는 태국 스테이지에 등장하지만 실제로는 일본인이라던가 라운드마다 시간대가 변하는 연출이라거나

전기가 흐르는 링과 같은 특수한 스테이지의 기믹도 전작에서 그대로 이어받았다.

보너스 스테이지가 팔씨름에서 돌기둥을 때려부수는 미니게임이 된 것은 다분히 술통이나 드럼통을 때려부쉈던 스트리트 파이터

2의 영향이며 배경에 파괴할 수 있는 물체가 놓여있는 것도 스트리트 파이터 2의 영향이다.

 

밸런스상으로는 연속기를 부정하는 시스템과 무시무시한 가드 대미지, 커맨드 문제 때문에 회피공격을 제때 사용하기가 힘들다는

문제 등으로 인해 빈틈이 적은 기술을 계속해서 사용하여 상대를 몰아붙이며 굳히기와 깎아먹기에 유리한 연계기가 있는 캐릭터

들이 매우 강했다. 좋은 예가 그 유명한 앤디의 참영권 - 앉아 강발 하메. 이 때문에 CPU의 난이도도 어려운 편에 속한다.

이런 점들 때문에 싱글 플레이가 아닌 대전을 중시한 디자인으로 나온 SNK의 첫 대전 액션 게임이지만 대전툴로서 밸런스는

그다지 좋은 편은 아니다. 대전 밸런스 문제는 후속편인 아랑전설 스페셜에 가서야 개선되었다.

Released in December 1992.

This game is known in Japan as "Garou Densetsu 2 - Arata-Naru Tatakai"

(translates from Japanese as 'Legend of Hungry Wolf 2 - The New Battle').

According to the USA flyer, the name of the game is 'Fatal Fury 2 - The Sultan of Slugs Battle Royale'.

On the ingame titlescreen, however, it's just called 'Fatal Fury 2'.

Things that changed in this sequel :

* This game allows you to switch between the background & foreground planes at will

(in the first game, you could only switch planes if the CPU was on a different battle plane!).

* The game ditches the previous game's 3 button setup (punch, kick & throw) in favor of a new 4 button setup

(light & heavy punches & kicks).

This is apparently one of the very first Neo-Geo fighters to use this now common button setup.

* This game introduces the use of Desperation Moves

(highly damaging techniques that can only be used when the life-bar is flashing red).

This game as well as "Art of Fighting" were the first fighting games to introduce these moves.

* Newcomers in the game are : Mai Shiranui, Cheng Sinzan, Kim Kaphwan, Jubei Yamada, Big Bear

(aka Raiden), Axel Hawk, Lawrence Blood & Wolfgang Krauser.

Richard Meyer, Michael Max, Tung Fu Rue, Duck King, Hwa Jai & Geese Howard were left out!

(although some of them make some cameos during some of the game's cut-scenes!).

Just as the first game introduced the famed Terry Bogard, this game features SNK's most popular fighter lady

: Mai Shiranui! :). Mai appears in "Quiz King of Fighters" as selectable character.

The Hungry Wolf is a reference to Terry Bogard, the main character in Fatal Fury.

Terry, Andy and Joe (and to a lesser extent, Mai and Mary) are referred to as the Lone Wolves.

Keeping the tradition of the first game, an animated movie based on this game was released in Japan featuring

character designs by Masami Ohbari.

The movie was also released in the USA by Viz Video, a division of Viz Comics.

After the second Fatal Fury movie was released, a third movie followed

(which predated "Fatal Fury 3 - Road to the Final Victory").

It follows the adventures of the Lonely Wolves (Terry, Andy, Joe and Mai) as they attempt to prevent a power-

hungry man from claiming all the parts of the legendary Armor of Mars.

When a player wins a match in a single player game, the post match screen shows people watching the

tournament inside the Pao Pao Cafe from the first game, "Fatal Fury - King of Fighters".

Pony Canyon released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game

(Garou Densetsu 2 - PCCB-00111) on 19/02/1993.

 

- TIPS AND TRICKS -

* You can only see any character's ending if you beat the game with a single credit used

(no continues or 2-Player matches are allowed)

* Just like the first game, it's possible to use the strategy of dashing at your opponents just as they're getting

up in order to damage them repeatedly.

* Billy Kane, Axel Hawk and Lawrence Blood all have stages that use a single plane, with the 'second' plane

having objects on it that can injure players if they're knocked against them (all three of these bosses have

ways of throwing their opponents into the background).

You can knock the bosses into the background too by standing close to them while they're dazed and then

hitting them with a good hard kick or punch.
